Tracking parameters (UTM)

Tracking parameters tell your own website analytics (for example Google Analytics) where a visitor came from. They are also called UTM parameters. QRForge adds them to the web address each time the code is scanned.

Example: a QR code on a flyer points to https://example.com/offer. With tracking parameters, scans arrive at your website as https://example.com/offer?utm_source=leaflet_qr&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=spring_sale. Your website analytics can then show "spring_sale, print, leaflet_qr" as the source of those visits.

Tracking parameters are available on Website URL QR codes, on the Pro plan and above.

The five fields

FieldWhat it describesExample
CampaignThe marketing campaignspring_sale
MediumThe kind of channelprint
SourceWhere exactly the scan came fromleaflet_qr
TermA search term (mainly for ads)dentist+near+me

You only need the fields you will use. Most people fill in Campaign, Medium and Source.

Add tracking parameters to a new code

  1. Create a Website URL code as usual. See Your first QR code.
  2. Before you click Create QR Code, open Advanced Settings.
  3. Under Tracking Parameters, click Configure Parameters.
  4. Fill in the fields you need.
  5. Click Add UTM Parameters.
  6. Click Create QR Code.

Change tracking parameters on an existing code

  1. In My QRs, click Edit QR code on the code's row.
  2. Click Edit Content.
  3. Open Advanced Settings and, under Tracking Parameters, click Configure Parameters.
  4. Change the fields and click Save UTM Parameters.
  5. Click Save Changes.

Tips

  • Use one naming style. Lower case with underscores, such as spring_sale, keeps your reports tidy. Spring Sale and spring_sale show as two different campaigns.
  • One source per placement. Give the flyer, the poster and the shop window their own code and their own Source. Then you can compare them.
  • QRForge analytics do not need UTM parameters. QRForge counts scans for every code anyway. UTM parameters are for the analytics of the website the code points to.
  • If you connect Google Analytics 4, QRForge also sends these values with each scan event.

Troubleshooting

"UTM parameters are not included in your current plan." Tracking parameters need the Pro plan or above. See Plans and what's included.

My website analytics do not show the campaign

  • Scan the code and look at the address bar. The utm_ values should be at the end of the address.
  • Some websites redirect visitors and drop the values on the way. Ask your web developer to keep query parameters on redirects.

I don't see Tracking Parameters They are only available for Website URL codes.
