Create a trail
This guide shows how to build a trail from start to finish. If you are new to trails, read What trails are first.
Before you start: prepare the stops
Every stop is a Landing Page QR code in the same project as the trail.
- Switch to the project you want to use. See Switch projects.
- For each stop, create a Landing Page QR code and build its page. See Create a landing page.
- Publish each page.
Tip: give each code a clear name, such as Stop 3 – Clock tower. You will pick the stops by name.
Step 1: Start a new trail
- In the left menu, click Trails.
- Click New Trail. The trail editor opens.
Step 2: Fill in the trail details
Under Trail details:
- Name (required) — for example Old Town Walking Tour.
- Description — a short overview for the overview page.
- Completion message — shown when a visitor finishes. Up to 80 characters. The field accepts longer text, but only the first 80 characters are saved and shown. For example Show this screen at the front desk for a free coffee!
- Completion link (optional) — turns the completion message into a button that opens this link: a discount page, a review link or your website.
- Cover image (optional) — click Upload cover photo. It is shown behind the trail name on the overview page.
- Trail map URL (optional) — a link to the route on AllTrails, Komoot or Google Maps. See Trail map and route.
- Brand color (optional) — a 6-digit colour code such as
#2563eb. It colours the trail's buttons and controls.
Step 3: Add the stops
- Under Stops, click Add stop.
- In Select a QR code, search for and click a landing page code.
- Repeat for each stop.
- For each stop, check the Label (shown to visitor), and add a Short description if you like.
- Put the stops in order with Move up and Move down.
To add a location to a stop, see Stops and locations.
Step 4: Save
Click Save. Your trail is now live and Active.
After saving you can:
- design and download the trail's entry QR code — see Entry QR code and printing;
- copy the trail link — see Share a trail.
Test your trail
- In Trails, click Preview trail to open the overview page.
- Scan each stop's QR code with your phone, in order.
- Check that Next, Directions and the completion message work.
Troubleshooting
"Trail name is required." — Fill in Name.
"Add at least one stop." — A trail needs at least one stop.
"Brand color must be a 6-digit hex code, e.g. #2563eb." — Use #
followed by six characters, or leave it empty.
"Map URL must be a valid https:// link." /
"Completion link must be a valid https:// link." — Use the full address,
starting with https://.
"No page QR codes in this project yet." — Stops must be Landing Page QR codes in this project. Create them first.
My landing page code is not in the list — The list shows only your 100 most recent page codes, and the search box searches only those. If the code you want is older, rename it or create the stop from the QR list. Also check that the code is in the same project as the trail.
"Trails are available on the Pro plan and above." — See Plans and what's included.
"Discard changes?" — You tried to leave with unsaved changes. Choose Keep editing, then click Save.
