Trail analytics and the funnel

Each trail has a Funnel that shows how far visitors get along the trail. This article explains exactly what each number counts. Please read the section How visitors are counted: it matters for how you read the numbers.

Where to find the funnel

  1. In the left menu, click Trails.
  2. Click the trail to open the trail editor.
  3. Scroll to Funnel. Click Refresh to load the latest numbers.

The funnel covers the last 30 days. A new trail shows "No visits yet. Data appears here once people start scanning this trail."

What each row means

Reached trail Visitors who reached the trail that day, either by scanning the entry QR code or by opening any stop. The daily numbers are added up over the 30 days. Opening the overview page through the trail link alone is not counted.

One row per stop (named after the stop's label) Visitors who opened that stop, counted per day and added up.

Completed Visitors who opened the last stop of the trail. It does not check that they saw every other stop. Someone who scans only the last stop also counts as completed.

The percentage next to a row (for example −40%) shows the drop compared with the row above. It only appears when the number goes down.

"… arrived by scanning the entry QR", above the bars, shows how many visits started with the trail's entry QR code.

How visitors are counted

To recognise a returning visitor, QRForge uses a small cookie in the visitor's browser.

On the standard qrforge.link address, this cookie cannot be kept. So on qrforge.link, every page open counts as a new visitor. If one person opens five stops, Reached trail goes up by five, not one. The funnel then shows page opens, not people.

On a custom domain the cookie works. A visitor is counted once per day in each row, however many times they open a page that day.

Across days, a visitor who comes back on another day is counted again, also on a custom domain.

What this means for you:

  • On qrforge.link, read Reached trail as total trail page views.
  • To count real visitors, use a custom domain for the trail's project.
  • In both cases, the shape of the funnel (which stops lose people) is still useful.

When the numbers update

The funnel is updated once a night. Visits from today appear tomorrow. This is normal. See Why today's numbers aren't shown yet.

Tips for a healthy funnel

  • If many people drop after one stop, check that stop: is it hard to find? Does its page load well? Is the next stop's location set, so Directions works?
  • Put the entry QR code where most people start.
  • Make the completion reward attractive, and say so on the entry sign.

Troubleshooting

The funnel shows zero, but I just tested the trail Today's visits appear after the nightly update. Check again tomorrow.

"Reached trail" is much higher than the number of visitors I had Your trail is on qrforge.link, where every page open counts. See How visitors are counted above.

"Could not load funnel." Click Refresh. If it keeps failing, try again later.
